A Lesson in Weed Slang (Or as we like to call it: “Blowin’ Smoke”)

According to Urban Dictionary, Weed stands for:

Slang for weed is almost Shakesperean in the way that it invents new words using common English phrases and re-purposes them with poetic justice. As you’ll find out, weed is not an acronym and comes from an entirely different source. In fact, your weed vocabulary is about to expand into a near-encyclopedic knowledge after you’ve read this lesson in weed slang.

Slang for Cannabis

Bud

Bud is a misleading term — as in botany, it refers to an undeveloped part of a plant, but in the case of cannabis, it refers to the nuggets (or buds) of the cannabis plant you grind up and smoke. Perhaps it’s actually referring to a shortened version of buddy, which would be kind of cute.

Chronic

In medical terms, chronic means “reoccurring” or “long-lasting”. Chronic is the name of a hybrid strain that has been known to be very potent.

Dab / Wax / Shatter / Budder

Dabbing has aged about as well as planking has. Thankfully, the dab we’re referring to is timeless and never out of style. It is concentrated cannabis oil made by extracting THC and is smoked using a dab rig.

Flower

This may or may not be our favourite word for cannabis, not only because it’s in our name, but because we think it’s just as pretty (we also think it’s a way better Valentine’s gift.)

Ganja

Ganja is the sanskrit name for hemp. Much like marijuana, this word has a racialized history and a deep ties to a few cultures. Between 1845 and 1917, Britain brought nearly 40,000 enslaved people from India to Jamaican plantation. The Indian slaves shared their knowledge of cannabis with many Jamaicans and they inherited the word into their language and culture.

Herb

A colloquial term for cannabis, referring to its likeness to many herbs, pungent fragrance and for those edible chefs out there — usefelness in the kitchen.

Marijuana

Refers to the original spanish name for cannabis — “marijhuana”. This term carries negative and racist connotations towards mexican culture, so we always use cannabis instead. We encourage you to read up on this history and do the same.

Nug

Nug is short for “Nugget” and it refers to the same thing that bud does — the part of the cannabis plant you grind up and smo
